NATO or the North Atlantic Alliance, sometimes called Atlantic Alliance or Western Alliance of 29 countries, is an international security organization created by signing of the North Atlantic Treaty on April 4th 1949. NATO’s headquarters is in Brussels, Belgium and this organization is a system of collective defense for its member countries, as a response to outside attacks.  In the early years, NATO was just a regular political association. The first Secretary General was Hastings Ismey, who stated that the aim of the organization is “Defense from the USSR, under leadership of the USA and keeping Germany submissive”. As a result of the important role that Britain gets in the Alliance, France withdrew from the pact in 1966. With the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the main goal of the alliance became winning over the support of the countries that used to be under the so called “Eastern Block” i.e. the ex-members of the Warsaw Agreement. This means, primary the Balkan countries, leading to the expansion of the alliance in 2004 (Bulgaria, Romania) and 2009 (Croatia, Albania). Macedonia was supposed to join the alliance in 2009, but due to the disagreement with Greece about the name Macedonia, Greece blocked our entrance during the Bucharest Summit. After the terrorist attacks in 2001 the USA, the alliance directed towards new challenges, engaging troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, which was perceived as NATO overcoming its so-called “Identity Crisis” in the 1990s.
